I was living in Likoni, the poorest suburb of Mombasa, Kenya as an intern with Hatua Likoni, a community NGO promoting education and employment amoung youth. I went to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to help a friend set up an NGO working in the area around Koshe, Addis Ababa's main trash dumping site. I volunteered at a public primary school in the area assisting with 7th and 8th grade Math and English classes. I also designed and implemented an 8th grade National Exam Prep Class to help students prepare for the exam which is in English and required to pass in order to move onto the 9th grade (the school currently has a 50% passage rate, one only needs to pass 3 out of 8 subject tests in order to pass). The program was launched at a second primary school in Addis in January 2014.
